Frequently Asked Questions
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that works on the body’s energy or “qi”. A smooth flow of this energy is essential to maintain wellness. Whenever this flow is disrupted or becomes stagnant, disease or pain can appear. Acupuncture is used to unblock stagnation and restore balance. The insertion of tiny needles at various points around the body has a systemic effect, ultimately encouraging the body to heal itself.
Does it hurt?
First time patients are often surprised to find that acupuncture is generally painless. The needles we use are significantly smaller than the hypodermic needles you are used to at the doctor's office. The majority of patients find the treatments very relaxing and many fall asleep.
Is it safe?
When acupuncture is done by a licensed acupuncturist it is very safe. We only use single use, pre-packaged, sterile needles. Some points are avoided during pregnancy so it's important to communicate if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to your acupuncturist.
How many times do I need to come?
This answer is highly variable. Factors such as age, vitality, lifestyle, co-existing conditions and duration of symptoms will have an effect on prognosis. In certain cases, multiple treatments per week may be beneficial. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, so consistency is key especially in the beginning. Megan will discuss your individual treatment plan with you during your first visit.
Did you have to go to school for this?
Yes. In the state of Maine, all acupuncturists must graduate from an accredited acupuncture school. This includes over 3,500 classroom and clinical hours; 730 of which are supervised internship hours. Additionally, you must pass four national board exams.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not accept insurance at this time. However, if you have out of network acupuncture benefits, I am happy to provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. I am also able to accept HSA/FSA.
